I teach an Introduction to Computer Science class at a University. The college used some grant money to buy a bunch of Pi kits (Canakit Ultimate Starter Kit, Pi 2), and they bought a load of these books for the students to use. My main issue with this book is in layout and clarity. Not one of the projects has a clearly identified part list a user needs to purchase to complete the project. At the beginning of every chapter, a complete list of parts and part numbers should be listed. Instead you figure out the parts as you read through the chapter. The GPS project looked promising, but the bullet list near the beginning is a bunch of features that the GPS receiver has, which the author then goes on to say that many of those features will not even be used. Huge waste of space and clarity.I appreciate that the author takes the time to indicate an electrical diagram for many of these projects, but that is not worth much of anything for the Pi. The user needs to have a clear indication of how to wire up the components on the project board to the GPIO pins. And to top it off the book is using an old Pi breakout (Pi Cobbler), which is even less understandable when you are using a Pi 2 kit which has the GPIO interface board.For example, in the GPS chapter, the only diagram the user has on how to wire everything up is a black and white small image, where the jumper wires cross over each other making it difficult to see exactly where each is going. Granted the author writes in text to connect TX to RX and so forth, but it would have been very easy and clear to simply draw the layout. Figure 5-15 that diagrams all this is still confusing as some wire is running off into who knows where in the image, and is never explained.Overall this is not a well constructed guide for a beginning user in a learning environment, which maybe it is not intended to be.

This book speaks to my engineering instincts and builds a solid foundation. One star shy of a five star rating because some of the contents needs updating. The chapter about the robotic car (Boe Bot) isnâ€™t complete with respect to instructions and is missing information about installing the library for controlling servo motors with a PCA9685 chip. The maker should be able to figure this but out with a little help from Google, but nevertheless the instructions should have been included in the book for consistency with the rest of the content. Notwithstanding this critique, I highly recommend this book for those who want to build a foundation than just a cool project.

This is one of those things you get and wish you had gotten it last year. Not only does this book show you how to build and program the projects, it goes behind the scene so to speak, and tells you in plain English, what the components you are using, actually do and how they work. Most books either tell you, get "piece A" connect this way, load this, power it up and go. This book explains what you are going to do, how the main component you are building around, works, and why you have to do what to get results.In other words, it tells you not only how, but why, on projects. You could spend hours on the Internet, trying to find details on how to use things like a GPS with your RPi but here in one place, you not only find how to make it work, but HOW it works, along with the sites you need to get the tools to use it, when it's finished.Best of all, you don't have to be a "Genius" to use this, even if you're new to Raspberry Pi, you will easily follow along with these projects. The author writes in very easy to follow format. You will definitely learn while using this book.

Some of the "Evil Genius" series better typifies the "evil" connotation than this book. However it is filled with real projects that will actually work and do real things. Not sure what is "evil" about this...The printing quality is mostly a problem in random number of the illustrations, especially the pictures and screen shots. Contrast and blurring makes it impossible to get any useful information out of them. And the size of some important illustrations is too small. For example, the "Project hardware layout" picture, figure 9-15 on page 121 is almost useless. A RaspberryPi is shown with a ribbon cable to a breakout board all sitting next to some other board that cannot be identified on top of what looks like more breakout board, perhaps all mounted on a Lexan or Plexiglas sheet. Considerable study of the text is needed to guess at the meaning of the picture, and I am certainly left with a concern that I am still missing something important.In the following chapter, "1-Wire Weather Station", many pictures are uselessly dark, but much of this can be "replaced" with web searches.Still, if you want to do real things with the RaspberryPi, here is a place to start. Perhaps the "evil genius" is that you will need to do a lot of outside research to complete some of these great projects. However, all of the projects are possible even for those of us who are neither evil or geniuses. However, don't start if you aren't determined to "git-er-done."

This is a great book with a lot of fun projects you can do with the Pi. Not all of them are simple and many require extra purchases in order to complete, but altogether a nice work from the author. I plan to do a few of them with my son soon.

I got this to do projects with my 17 year old son and teach him how to code with Python in a fun way. It does exactly that.

Interesting and informative. Unfortunately there is no parts lists for projects, so you can get half way through development and find that you need a component.

I wish this book went into more detail for set up issues. It may be good later on, but not written for the beginner.

Most of the book is Adamsâ€™ observations on the culture surrounding the buildings, moreso than on the buildings themselves. Adams takes us on a gothic travelogue through the intrigues of mediÃ¦val royal families of France, clashes in the cloisters of church hierarchy, power struggles in church and court, dark-age philosophers and poets telling stories captured in sparkling gothic stained-glass perfection.Reminiscent of Melvilleâ€™s long chapters on the anatomy of the whale, there are long detailed descriptions of the elements of the cathedral. Wading through that pays off. The stories told literally and figuratively in the massive stained glass paintings, in themselves and in their relation to other architectural features, represent the heart and soul of peopleâ€™s faith, fears, allegiances, loves, hates, and pivotal events of the time.So many fascinating stories and events converge in the 1100s and 1200s: the Golden Legend; the founding of Orders; the Chanson de Roland as metaphor for Mont-Saint-Michel, or vice versa; the intellectual romance of AbÃ©lard and HÃ©loÃ¯se, Christian of Troyes retelling the age-old story of Tristan and Iseult (originating from a pre-Islamic Persian story); the famous invention and flowering of â€œCourteous Loveâ€ and how it is epitomized in the chantefable Aucassins et Nicolette; the real-life romances of Thibaut and Blanche of Castille; the backdrop of the Crusades; the touching familial closeness of Richard CÅ“ur de Lion and Mary of Champagne; the Magna Charta and the Zodiac Window; the scholastic vs. mystic battles of theology between AbÃ©lard and Bernard of Clairvaux; inquiries into universals of geometry and syllogisms, and unity versus multiplicity; the controversy of the two Popes and its effects on peopleâ€™s careers.The book closes out the 1200s with Thomas Aquinasâ€™ rise from â€œdumb oxâ€ to Summa Theologicaâ€”building his Church Intellectual to complement the Church Architecturalâ€”a â€œgothic Cathedral to the Trinityâ€ (329). As Adams puts it, â€œHis sense of scale and proportion was that of the great architects of his ageâ€ (354, 355). For culture, science, and art, the equilibrium of the universe rested on the delicate balance of the flying buttresses.To most people, the above references have little meaning, if any. But if you read this book, they will have a lot of meaning and enrich your experience. The broad brushstrokes across history, occasionally filled in with colorful detail, renewed my interest in the period. So after finishing the book, I searched on key people and events and found additional fascinating bits of historical intrigue. To fully appreciate Adams's book the reader is required to know the general parameters of the author's life. While Adams's autobiography, "The Education of Henry Adams" , was written after this volume it is nevertheless necessary to read it first and to also acquaint oneself with the details ofAdams's marriage to Clover Hooper and her suicide which are not mentioned at all in the book. "Mont Saint Michel and Chartres" is personalized history. If you want a more objective history look elsewhere. Some people are put off by its subjectivity. But in my view that subjectivity is exactly what makes the book so great. It's about the tremulous, perilous striving of an age, of religion, of faith, and finally of one's personal life. It's about the stress between unity and multiplicity. The book is profound in its exploration of these themes. It's learned, it's funny, it's ironic, and, in the end, profoundly moving. Reading these two books will provide any reader wiling to put in the effort with some of the wisest and most trenchant observations in all literature all put forth in some of the most elegant prose ever written.

I have always loved the tone and personality of Adams' autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams. But I'd never read Mont Saint Michele and Chartres. Got the book for my Kindle as travel reading. Having been to both places made the book very easy to get into. Adams brings his wonderful mind, wit, learning, and insight to bear on these two sacred spots as expressions of the Romanesque and Gothic sensibilities, the male and female, justice and mercy. he thinks in terms of the dualisms inherent in Christianity and the psychological archetypes prevalent in his time. In the course of the book he takes the reader from the earlier Norman-era shrine to the flat fields southwest of Paris where Chartres cathedral dominates the skyline. Along the way he engages every major medieval personality, from Abelard to Aquinas. Adams evokes a vision of the tensions, ideals, and travails of the Middle Ages. And he presents the only cogent rationale I have ever read for the veneration / worship of the Virgin. Read this book. It will stimulate your intellect and please your imagination.
